THE QUEEN OF PUNK IS DEAD, LONG LIVE THE QUEENOF PUNK!

The list of women who had been granted the honoury title of 'queen of punk' or the more horrid 'high priestess of punk' (shame on the sod who thought that one up) during the late 70's and early 80's is a long one.
Many were the names, siouxsie sue, ari up, toyah, wayne county (joke), gaye advert, debbie harry, patti smith, jordan, vivienne westwood, beki bondage and so on. but at least this list of names along with other un-named 'punkettes' were at least involved with and part of punk.
Then the term died down in the 1990's and we didnt hear that much of it (apart from the anniversaries that pop up every five years to remind us that punk died suddenly in a puff of smoke in 1978, in case you didnt notice).
But, its back....and its not just regarding the old (pardon me ladies) guard of female punks this time, oh no. this time the stupid phrase is being thrown around like mad, its even being given to kiddie pop singers who have funny hairdo's. Take that geezerbird 'pink' for instance, she has even been given the title on the cover of pop magazines for gods sake. another one is that 'avril lavigne'. i swear shes only been granted the title because she wears suspiciously always new looking DM boots in her videos and has had a hit song who's theme was about a ballet pupil falling in love with a guy from the (how original) wrong side of the tracks, or in her case, half pipe. and there are more who have had this 'honour' bestowed on them but enough of examples.
the point is, is that there isnt a 'queen of punk' or a 'high priestess' either, there never has been. And if you had called it to the old lot you would of rightly of been told to fuck off.
But these new youngsters seem to revel in it and seem quite happy with it, now that we have the RAMONES music on scooby doo (it works quite well i have to confess), being 'punk' is the in thing for the pop music buying public and kiddies. so sadly it seems likely that the 'queen' and 'priestess' titles are going to be with us for some time to come. its when that...courtney love is titled so that i cringe most, because apart from her probally believing it, i wouldnt be suprised to find that she requires it to be written on every magazine cover featuring her scary face. and apart from anything, i think that she is about as punk as a green salad! i mean really, what can you expect from someone who's 'punk icon' is nancy spungen? the queen of punk is dead, let her rot!
