THIS IS ENGLAND is a film set in the early 1980's about a young boy who has all the classic traits of the class oddball, he's lonely, has no friends and gets picked on.
that is until one day when he becomes befriended and taken under the wings of a gang of skinheads, just one in a list of 'tribes' as the youth of Britain was then, (you had to be something then, depending on what was popular in the area at the time more often than not), and there was also a real feeling that people were really interested in politics, i remember when we were kids we would watch the people going into the voting halls and talked about who we were going to vote for, now the youth of the same age just say "they're all the same, why bother?" (vote for something different?) anyway, back to the film. the young boy of the film 'Shaun' gets taken under the wing of the skins 'leader' 'woody' and his skinette girlfriend 'lol' who turn him into a mini skin and accept him in the gang. and for a while all was peace in the realm of the skin who just skanked their time away in time to their favourite ska and reggae tunes. that is until the arrival of 'combo' who has arrived to teach the skins the truth about the master race and their upcoming role in the taking back Britain for the whites by force if necessary, etc.
this leads to 'milky' the gangs only non-white member becoming a target of abuse from former friends who now resent his presence, so, unsuprisingly 'milky' is exited from the gang.
the next to leave the new racist 'bonehead' gang is former leader 'woody' after a run in with the obviously violent sociopath 'combo' who has now taken on the role of gang leader. these cataclysmic events turn 'Shaun's' safe new world upside down and leaves poor young 'Shaun' not knowing where to turn, either be with the mates who have been ostracised or his stay with his 'changed' now nasty and a bit scary ones. the film, written and directed by an ex-skinhead wanted to capture not only the splits that were occurring within the skinhead scene but also by extension the way thatchers Britain was also tearing its self apart at the same time, it was a time of great change and uncertainty for Britain and MADE IN ENGLAND is one persons way of showing that through one of the era's most memorable 'tribes' and the media panic and lies that has left it with such an ugly reputation. its worth at least checking it out, or you could buy a pirate copy and hope its quality is decent enough to be watchable... but then you know the chances ain't good.
but truth be said, the film does a brilliant job of recreating England in the late 70's early 80's and the events that were changing the skinhead cult from mixed race to neo Nazi (for some and not all), a great effort from the young cast and its writer/director, and i i foresee that one day this film will be seen in the same league as youth cult films like clockwork orange and quadraphenia, and one that will leave film's like 'rude boy' (featuring the clash) in its well earned shadow and dust.
