ANNIVERSARY TIME, joe 'pootie' newman', mrs neil and the falklands

The year 2007 is a year to reflect, it was 25 years ago that the Falkland islands were invaded and the kids in my school (like many others) were running about like headless chickens because we thought that the Argentinians had invaded Scotland! "how the fuck did the 'argies' (as they came to be called) manage to get an invading fleet all the way up there without being noticed?". that was the extent of the average British kids knowledge about the islands and where they were at the time, after all "the Falklands sounds Scottish don't it!" well as we all know, the war turned British politics on its head and made the most hated prime minister in recent British history into the most popular (and gave her the name 'mother of a 1000 dead'), and at the time the islanders were not even entitled to a british passport! and all this during an election year in Britain as well, not a good year in that respect. there was some great punk records released that year though.
but the war is not the only 25th anniversary we have to remember, we also had the sad demise of jazz trumpeter Joe 'pootie' Newman, lead soloist with Lionel Hampton and later count Basie who died in July 1982 aged 69. Newman was a well known ladies man who because of his age had a penile implant in 1979, sadly the operation was not a success, post op Newman experienced a series of penis explosions (one happened while the poor Mr Newman was in a restaurant) which led to a build up of an internal blood which leaked from the old mans old man and slowly moved up to his brain and formed a blood clot that killed him, Newman's last LP was entitled hangin' out'.
and also spare a thought (and tell anyone you know who doesn't brush their teeth) for Mrs rose Neil 58. she also died 25 years ago this year when a lifetime fear of dentists got the worst of her, Mrs Neil contracted oral thrush from her rotting teeth which caused a blood infection that developed into meningitis and killed her. nice, stick that in your dirty crack pipe crusty!
