Oh what joy it was to see the little electric blue square of musical doo-doo in front of me, the times had given out their 'anarchy in the UK' CD vol 2. and it doesn't take a genius to guess what tracks they put on it. (sound of the suburbs anyone?)
the track listing (and concept, if that is what it is) reminds me of an article that was in the first of the paper zero hour fanzine (i still miss that printer), only it was about a CD called 'teenage kicks'. my point was exactly the same as the one I'm making now, i.e that the songs chosen were ones that people were sick to death of hearing and besides, they were not the best songs to use as a sample of the sounds of the 1970's, and yes just as on teenage kicks (i predicted it would reach a 2nd volume and 'ding' it did!) we have even got 'hersham boys' on it, although for once the Cd's compilers forgot to include a version of 'Oliver's army' though they did make up for it by including the CD compilers favourite space filling band (long songs), Ian dury and the blockheads with a live version of 'hit me with your rhythm stick'. other than a song by stiff little fingers called 'Beirut moon' (it is an occasional move sticking in a newish song by a reformed band, usually not to the bands best interests).
the 2nd volume of the times 'anarchy in the UK, 30 years of punk' CD (hold on, i thought that '30 years of punk' was last year!) was everything i expected, a dull CD with worn out old songs that are available to buy on any 'punk compilation' you care to pick up, and thats if you dont already own a old copy of the singles already! i mean for fucks sake it has even got jilted john on it! how, can the compilers be so lazy? and some of the versions of songs on the 'anarchy cd' are available free on 'myspace'. still, Ive thought about and i think that the joke is on them, having to stoop to jumping on to the 'punk anniversary bandwagon' to sell papers is a low move, for such an established conservative paper that wore its politics on its arm to now use 'anarchy' to sell papers is really sad and marks them out as looking really desperate, i mean after all Ive never got a free sunday times with a punk record, and hope i never do!!
