For some reason yesterday tabloid newspaper THE STAR (on Sunday) gave away a free CD of THE RAMONES with one their rubbish mags.
Of the CD itself the tracks are ones picked out that are fairly decent and show THE RAMONES at their best (apart from ROCK'N'ROLL HIGH SCHOOL which some may not consider one of the best tracks THE RAMONES ever recorded), although there is only seven tracks to listen to which is a bit of a shame.
And for anyone who is interested the tracks are, BLITZKRIEG BOP, SHEENA..., DO YOU WANNA DANCE, TEENAGE LABOTOMY, ROCK'N'ROLL HIGH SCHOOL, PIN HEAD, and PET SEMETARY. i hope you found that informative.
All well and good, a free RAMONES CD you may think, but after the seven songs have flashed by you are then confronted with the 'bonus' tracks. what comes next is not what you would expect to hear sharing a CD with a punk band (of any kind).
The 'bonus' tracks are not only longer than THE RAMONES songs, there is also more of them!
The songs are a mixture of middle of the road 'soft rock', naffly made 'chill out' tracks and 'world music', all done in an 'over produced' mellow manner, a total contrast and difference than what had come before, it is totally out of place on a RAMONES CD, or maybe THE RAMONES are out of place on a middle of the road CD, with the music being split the way it is its hard to tell.
And just who did THE STAR think they were giving a RAMONES CD too? i cant imagine the paper being one that has a predominately punk readership, maybe they had conducted a poll that consisted of RAMONES fans over in ENGLAND to 'sight see' all the places where DEE DEE RAMONE had stayed while living in London during the 1980's, who can tell what led to such an odd decision for a tabloid giveaway? (and on a sunday).
Personally i imagine the average STAR reader to be the type who holidays in IBIZA or AYA NAPA (or however its spelt)and who listen to KISS FM during the day and groove's to 'chart dance' at night, sweating on the dance floor to the latest "follow meee...." euro dance hits (that comes with their own obligatory semi-porn video's), but i could be wrong (and lets face it i have been in the past more than once) and THE STAR is the 'punk paper' to read, not being a tabloid reader, well not in public, i honestly don't know what THE STAR is like. well, i have flicked through other peoples copies of it in the past at work during breaks but the last time was many moons ago.
So if there is anyone who thinks THE STAR is the paper to read then please tell me why, i wont laugh at you for it, i promise.
