It looks like i have been barking up the wrong tree when it comes to punk fans and weekend papers, and that most punk fans are the type you see on TV adverts who get up early on the weekends (pulling open the curtains to let the light come flooding into the uncluttered white bedroom) and take the dog for a run before taking little TOBY to his weekend 8.15am 'PILATE'S' class and then, passing 'raj's fags'n'mags' before bouncing back into bed with a tray of toast, coffee, a rose in a glass and a selection of the days papers to read with a fresh looking other half.
The reason i say this is because yesterday, as part of their series of booklets entitled "great interviews of the 20th century" THE GUARDIAN has featured what is probably the most re-shown film clip and most transcribed two minutes of TV ever, i am of course referring to the SEX PISTOLS BILL GRUNDY INTERVIEW.
I am sure there will be some people who haven't heard the whole thing and will read it, but I'm sure they will equal those who keep all the booklets from the series without ever doing more than skimming over them. What I'm more sure of is that it will either be of momentary interest till the recycling needs done or it will be horded by SEX PISTOLS fanatics, eager for the next item of PISTOLS memorabilia to catalogue and collect, despite having it already in almost every SEX PISTOLS book and article out. How long till its for sale on EBAY?
Of the booklet itself it opens with a foreword that captures the timing of the interview well and puts it in its right context without going into the same old "bin strikes and bodies left unburied" guff before the interview which is reprinted whole (for the 1000 time). Then as an 'afterword' we are treated to a ludicrous two and a half page spew of words written by MALCOLM MCLAREN telling us that it was basically all his idea and that the conduct of the interview was part of his master plan to save 'the kids' of England from 'boredom and lies', it really is bollocks but it is also worth a read because it contradicts what the rest of what the pistols have all independently said about how mclaren shat himself when he heard the swearing and was as shocked as everyone else, yes, MALKY forgot that bit.
But i have always enjoyed it when MCLAREN is given the chance to let rip with his ego, he claims to be behind everything since the fall of the roman empire! he can be funny but cant be believed.
'But its not all dark cynical stuff, the swindle also has that cute "aahhh!" factor as well. Take the Xmas prezzie i got from a mate last year, it was a wooden box with the name SID VICIOUS written on the front in typical 'kidnap' lettering. Upon opening the box you find a cardboard box housing a two inch LEGO style figure of SID his self, complete with painted on padlock'n'chain, leopard skin waistcoat, studded wristband and spikey' hair, he even has a leather jacket and big boots, now isn't that cute!
Another cute swindle product are the tiny fridge magnets that feature THE PISTOLS record sleeves (which i don't own). And, i even have a couple of "weally weally cute" two inch CD'S with picture covers, one is 'god save the queen' with 'did you no wrong' and 'dontcha give me no lip' on it, while the other is 'anarchy in the u.k' with 'no fun' and 'emi', the covers are so "itty bitty" now how cute is that ? "aahhh" (well, i only paid a pound for each one, honest, and they do play!). i wonder if the 'swindle' is ever going to slow down, or even stop? not while the band are alive i suppose, even then their deaths would be an excuse to release another pistols record i imagine.
THE BEAST IS UNSTOPPABLE!
