a review-THIS IS BRITAIN starring TIM ROTH dvd release

It was good to come across a copy of this film drama on DVD release as my video copy has long since been of any decent quality, despite it being a real release, so i got a DVD one, watched it and, enjoyed it.
Out of all the films featuring the 'mixed up angry young skinhead', Britain's THIS IS BRITAIN is still the best despite the years since its release, yet when thinking of SKINHEAD FILMS the first to come to mind are usually either AMERICAN HISTORY X or ROMPER STOMPER because they are more recent, but what is best about THIS IS BRITAIN is that the skinhead look is just an outward expression of the 'angry young man' not a reason why the young man is, which is why THIS IS BRITAIN is also different because it doesn't try to use the SKINHEAD style as some kind of poxy metaphor to explore or find an answer (or blame) in, he is just there, he is a skinhead, simple, no dull musings as to why he is a skinhead, which just adds unnecessary padding to a plot, "we know why he's a skinhead for gods sake".
And where as ROMPER STOMPER used touches of ROMEO AND JULIET and AMERICAN HISTORY X used contemporary racist America as a device, THIS IS BRITAIN relies on the adventures of the character played by TIM ROTH alone who lets the skinheads actions do the thinking for us, the 'confused young 'racist' is seen as he gets close to a black kid to who he shows his secrets, we see how his nearest father figure is his social worker who has had enough, and we watch as his attention seeking actions sink lower as he feels (and makes himself) more 'left out' of the world before we see the obvious results.
The open end is typically from the 'kitchen sink drama' mould but it is played brilliantly by a young TIM ROTH in his first major role.
This is still the best SKINHEAD FILM, after so many years.
well worth getting a copy.
