"im still in love with the uk subs" (to paraphrase a rubbish song).
The sound engineer at the UK SUBS gig last Saturday deserves to be slapped in the face with a large and old stinking fish, the sound was terrible, i stood next to the 'sound booth' and something was making a mess of it all, from the booth you could only hear the odd screech from the guitar and vocals which sounded like they were shouted through a dented megaphone, and as for he bass, well, i could hardly hear the bass. i haven't got a clue what was going into the sound man's ears, but, in the name of fair play i will consider blaming the venues sound equipment.
Another awful fuck up was the sound for the drums, they sounded like the drummer was pounding away at a load of biscuit tins, but then what could you expect from a young bloke with a beard and a woolly rainbow pattered hat? The wankafarian should be buried under piles of UK SUBS records, no, make that BLODWYN PIG records, and lots of them (that is if it was his fault of course).
The beardy sound man ruined what would of been a great gig, instead it was just o.k, the band deserved better, sadly i missed the other bands because of the shite opening and closing times.
The after gig party at the HOPE AND ANCHOR that was organised by the gigs promoter MS SARAH PINK (she of PEAFISH PROMOTIONS who put on the last ROLLINS/RUTS goodbye/PAUL FOX gig) had better sound, although i could only be saying that because along with a mate (Mon Amie) i was jockeying discs, it was the first time i had DJ'ed for ages and apart from a few mistakes at the start i was bloody great, even if i say so myself. The reaction got better as the night wore on, i could see that me and my (ahem) DJ 'partner' were doing well because people were standing on the stage area and singing (well, screaming- badly!!) and playing air guitar in time to the records we were playing, we also had some fun taking requests, we played the usual 'greatest hits' punk and ska tunes and also played some records not usually heard out, my favourite being 'HAVE YOU GOT 10p? by THE EJECTED (pure class, Ive been dying to hear that one out for years), and i also got a chance to play the single 'freaked', CHARLIE HARPER'S little known psychedelic solo single from 1981, i even got its cover signed by the great man who was a bit surprised at the sight of the single, apparently he hadn't seen a copy for many years.
All in all it was a good night, and the bands played well at the gig venue, they were just let down by shit sound. -Ah, yes, there was another thing, the gig venue shut early so that it could become a night club, now, i don't care if people want to dance disco, but making the venue shut early meant that the bands an fans had to accommodate the shorter time, why open a club at eleven pm anyway? people are either still in the pub or sat at home taking the first of the evenings rave drugs anyway.
Another bonus that evening was the copy of the album 'lets finish what we have stared' by THE DUEL that was given to me by that nice lady who sings for the band TARA REZ, the LP has got 15 little punk pop belters, a good 'poppy' punk LP.
