The decision by whoever in X RAY SPEX to allow the bands music to be used in an advert by Barkleys bank could not have come at a worse time although the irony of a song from their LP being used by such a well known company is not lost on me, the music forms the backing to the spiel voiced by Stephen Merchant co-writer of the office comedy show.
Lets hope Poly Styrene doesn't choose to go to the G20 protests this coming weekend because the bad karma generated by the bands financial alliance with the long hated corporation could very well come back on her in the form of a finger wagging self righteous crusty girl upset because her favourite band had sold out.
As far as street cred goes X RAY SPEX were one of those early punk bands who managed to largely keep hold of it but, with this ad coming as it does at a time of financial trouble, from a bank with a terrible human rights record their shine may become somewhat tarnished.
